Too many people, I am fairly certain, think that becoming a webmaster seems like an overly complicated and technical chore.  It really is not.  If you want to build an Internet home business and market it on the Internet you really need to become a webmaster.  If you want to market your home business by holding hotel meetings, placing signs along your local streets and highways, developing and paying for print ads, as well as by using other old fashioned and expensive methods, then sure… you do not need to learn how to become a webmaster.  Short of that, you better get started.

Here are three essential things you need to learn to become a webmaster:

Do Not Pay Money for Traditional Software Programs!

Programs like Dreamweaver or FrontPage are great programs; however you need a basic understanding of HTML code to make them work for you.  Learning any type of computer code is a very complicated process and the software is expensive!  Prices for Dreamweaver start at around $700.  You are more likely to go broke and lose interest in your Internet home business if you pursue this route without a fundamental understanding of HTML. And, if you want to start learning about code, you are not going to find enough answers here!

Plus, these are only website building programs!  There is another side to this very important equation.  Assuming you can build a website, what comes next?  Where do you put it?  In other words, how do you get it on the Internet?

Find a Top Web Hosting Company with Great Customer Service!

This is where the “rubber really hits the road!”  This is where you put or host your website. This is your vehicle that gets it on the Internet. If you use a program like Dreamweaver or FrontPage, you are simply building website pages.  You need to host these pages.  In other words, you need to get these website pages loaded onto your hosting account.

This is not like using a word processing program, like MS Word and uploading or dropping files into your hosting account.  That’s because these files are written in HTML code.  You need to do, what’s called, an FTP (File Transfer Protocal) transfer to upload your files to your hosting account.  This is another process you have to learn.  In fact, it is a very important process.  But, you can easily learn that in due time.  It is rather easy once you have done an FTP transfer a few times.  However, if you are trying to learn how to use a program like Dreamweaver, along with getting a grasp on HTML code and add learning how to do an FTP transfer on top of this, you can get very frustrated… FAST!  This can set your goal of building an Internet home business back in a huge way!  Believe me, it did for me!

you need to be. Both hosting accounts provide you cPanel and WHM.  WHM, or Web Host Manager is a great and easy to use program that allows you build a shell for you website.

cPanel includes such things as establishing professional email accounts for your business.  In other words, you do not have to use your Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail account for your Internet home business.  You use your own domain name. So, if your domain is www.einternetmarketingservices.org, you can and should use something like rick@einternetmarketingservices.org as your professional email address.  This enhances your credibility, plus you can always forward any email to this address to your Gmail, Yahoo or Hotmail accounts should you choose to do so.

cPanel also includes a program called Fantastico Delux.  Fantastico includes a script for WordPress.  A script is a prebuilt software package.  Technically, the industry refers to it as a content management program.  It’s like getting Dreamweaver or FrontPage free with your hosting.  There is no need for building pages, then uploading them to your hosting company. This is all self-contained.  WordPress has become the industry standard for building websites.  And, it’s free.  There are hundreds, if not thousands, of free templates to use.

WordPress plugins are one of the most remarkable features of this very powerful tool use by many to build an Internet home Business. If it is not already, it is quickly becoming the industry standard. In fact, if you are not using WordPress to build your Internet home business website, you are making a huge mistake. And, WordPress plugins provide the functionality for your website.

A plugin is actually a piece of software or code designed to perform a particular function. For example, if you have an e-commerce website, you look for WordPress plugin. Or, if you want to do invoicing directly from your Internet home business website, you simply look for WordPress plugin that is built to do that! Furthermore, they are easy to find right from your WordPress dashboard and can be installed with the push of a button.

WordPress plugins can only be used on self-hosted WordPress websites. This is another great reason to get your own hosting. And, I recommend HostGator. All HostGator accounts come with Fantastico Delux… which provides a one-step installation of WordPress! The service that WordPress offers for free blogs is simply fantastic and a great way to get content on the Internet. However, it does not support WordPress Plugins!

Here is a list of standard WordPress Plugins that I highly recommend and personally use. Just type the bolded name into the plugin search box.

1. Akismet: Akismet is quite possibly the best way in the world to protect your blog from comment and trackback spam. It keeps your site protected from spam 24/7/365. This will require you to get an API key at Akismet.com. But, once you have your key, you can use it on multiple sites!  Akismet is actually pre-installed on WordPress.

2. Jetpack by WordPress.com: See this article on Jetpack by WordPress! This is a must add to any WordPress site! It is multi-functional and replaces an earlier need for other plugins. At this time it includes 10 different free features. There is one other “paid” feature called Vault Press, which I find a little pricey. But, here are the ones I recommend activating:

• Sharing: Drag and drop Social Media sharing services into the enabled section to have them show up on your site, and drag them into the hidden section to have them hidden behind a button. Lots of options! Google Plus, Facebook, Linked-In, Digg, Redditt, Twitter, etc.  And, if you want to add one, it’s easy to create! I’ve replaced a former plugin with this feature, and I really liked that former plugin!

• Spelling and Grammar: The After the Deadline Proofreading service improves your writing by using artificial intelligence to find your errors and offer smart suggestions. After the Deadline provides a number of customization options, which you can edit in your profile. Google loves good grammar and this one will “kick-your-butt!” But, you will be better off using this!

• Subscriptions: Easily allow any visitor to subscribe to all of your posts via email through a widget in your blog’s sidebar. Every time you publish a post, WordPress.com will send a notification to all your subscribers. I’ve put this on all my sites! The emails your subscribers receive are extremely professional with the WordPress logo right at the top of the email!

• WordPress.com Stats: There are many plugins and services that provide statistics, but data can be overwhelming. WordPress.com Stats makes the most popular metrics easy to understand through a clear and attractive interface. I’ve used a few different plugins to check my stats, but have settled on this one for now. I really like the idea that this plugin and features are produced by WordPress. It gives me added confidence that they will be updated in a timely matter, and that’s great for my site security! If you have the old WordPress.com Stats installed separately on your site already, go ahead it delete it.

3. Cbnet Ping Optimizer: Say what??? This valuable plugin saves your wordpress blog from getting tagged as ping spammer. As good as it is, WordPress has a flaw. Everytime, you update an article or post, it send outs a ping notifying the world that you just published a post. This plugin stops that from happening! …so, what is a ping? Read more here!

4. Google Ajax Translation: The Google AJAX Translation WordPress plugin provides a quick, simple, and light way to add translation to your blog. This will translate your articles into any of 52+ languages. I have sites that are indigenous to the U.S., but I have other sites that are international. Why not provide an international user an easy way to translate and read your material?

5. W3 Total Cache: This plugin improves the user experience of your site by improving your server performance, caching every aspect of your site, reducing the download times and providing transparent content delivery network (CDN) integration. In other words, it allows your site and pages to load much faster and this is a unit of measure that Google uses to rank your website. This is particularly important for websites that have a great deal of content!

6. Privacy Policy: I have Easy Privacy Policy installed on my site, but it looks like it has been discontinued. You need a Plugin that automatically adds a privacy policy page that includes things like an Adsense compliancy section, information on the collection of cookies, etc. All the compliance legalese is done for you! Don’t forget to cover this base! Otherwise, Google may not like you! And, you want Google to like you… as they are more likely to send you visitors! As of this writing, I could not find a good, free Privacy Policy Plugin available.

There are several, but they haven’t been tested in WordPress 3.3.1. For example: WP Policies, Terms & Conditions and Terms of Use. Akismet Privacy Policies appears to be current and very good, but it’s in German.

7. Fast Secure Contact Form: The contact form lets your visitors send you a quick E-mail message. Super customizable with a multi-form feature, optional extra fields, and an option to redirect visitors to any URL after the message is sent. This WordPress plugin includes CAPTCHA and Akismet support to block all common spammer tactics. Plus, Google wants you to provide a contact feature to your users!

WordPress Plugins for Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

SEO is search engine optimization. Proper SEO allows the major search engines (Google, Bing and Yahoo) to index and rank your website. The higher you are ranked the more organic or free traffic they will send you.

Special Note: There is one setting that I highly recommend you change in WordPress and do this for all new installations. If you have an old installation, I also recommend it. One of my sites had over 90 articles when I updated this setting, and it worked great!

Change the default WordPress Permalink default feature. This will automatically apply to the title of your posts and pages.

How? Just follow these steps.

• On your WordPress Dashboard, Pick “Settings”
• Then Choose “Permalinks”
• Tick on the “Custom Title” option
• Then type in /%postname%/
• Hit Save!

8. Google XML Sitemaps: This plugin will generate a special XML sitemap which will help search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo and Ask.com to better index your site! Plus, it will provide you direct access to both Google and Bing Webmaster Tools. You need to claim your site(s) with both Google and Bing and verify that you are the owner. I use the Meta Tag option. This is easy stuff; as I will show you with the next WordPress plugin.

9. Custom Headers and Footers: This plugin adds custom header and footer Meta Tags for main page content. This is where you simply copy and paste the Meta Tag that Google and Bing send you to verify your website! Here is a screen shot of exactly where it goes. You just click “Update Settings” at the bottom of the page, then return to Google or Bing and click their “Verify Now” button!

10. Platinum SEO Pack: This WordPress plugin provides a complete SEO solution for your WordPress blog. I probably run against convention here. A lot of people use All-in-One SEO. It really doesn’t matter, but you should definitely install one or the other.

11. Keyword Statistics: This plugin checks the content of a post or a page for keyword-density (single words and optionally 2- and 3-word phrases). This is an awesome plugin. It can update its information on the fly while the author is writing content. This is great way for you to check and improve your keyword density! And, keep that density at about 2-3 percent!

In conclusion, I have provided you the most essential WordPress plugins available today! So, if you are building an Internet home Business or contemplating doing so, WordPress is the platform on which you should build your business.  And, if you load these plugins, get familiar with them and keep your eyes and ears open for new developments, I virtually guarantee you will be well ahead of your peers.

You put a lot of time and effort into building your Internet home business website.  And, as you know, I am a huge proponent for using a self-hosted WordPress site for your business.  Unfortunately, a lot of Internet home business builders leave their website vulnerable to hackers.  And, hackers can destroy your site; essentially wasting all the hard work you have put into it.  The bottom line is that you need to have a secure username to help ward off hackers.  Here is a short video showing you how to change your username in WordPress.

Most of these features are free to the user.  The feature I’d like to focus on here is the Subscription feature. This will create an opt-in sign in that allows the user to receive notifications on all your new posts!

This is not to diminish the huge value associated with the Jetpack Plug-in‘s other features.  For example, Site Stats allows you to track the traffic to your website.  The Spelling and Grammer feature will notify you of spelling and grammar mistakes when you attempt to publish your article.  The Short Links feature enables you to create short URL’s for your posts, and the Sharing and Enhanced Distribution features are additional methods that help you generate traffic to your website.  And, you can expect new free features to be added as they become available.

The Subscription feature greatly enhances your interface with your users.  It provides an opt-in for your users to receive a very professional email notification whenever you publish a new post or article.  In turn, this increase your website traffic.

The Jetpack Plugin’s opt-in code is simply placed in a widget on your website.  Therefore, it can be shown on your website wherever your theme allows you to place widgets.  On the site I use here as an example, I have placed the widget into the “Top Feature” of my theme.  If your theme does not have this option, you can simply place your code in a sidebar widget.

Here’s the sizzle!  Many people who visit a website never return.  However, if you can capture their email address you have the ability to bring them back over and over again.  This increases your website traffic and enhances your ranking with the search engines.

The end product produced by the Subscription feature is top-notch and highly professional! I was very pleased and little surprised on how good it looks to the user.

This is a screenshot I took of the article published in Hot Sports Topics.  This is how it actually appeared in my Microsoft Outlook email account.

This is new site I created for my cousin, Mike Pietrzyk.  Mike is now living his dream and writing on sports topics.  He is doing an awesome job.  I host it and provide some SEO sizzle to drive traffic to it.  In time, we will monetize the site.

But, look at some of the really nice components associated with this email.  At the very top, you see the WordPress logo… very professional.  The entire article is actually shown, but I cut off a lot of it to save space in this picture.

It is identical to the actual post on the Hot Sports Topics website.  All the links are active!  They can be clicked and followed in your default browser.

I’ve used some anchor text (“dream come true”) that is linked to a primary keyword string in the actual article.  So, a user can simply click on that anchor text, without going to the actual article, and pass this article some valuable search engine juice!

While it does not provide a social media share button, it does provide a short URL if someone wants to Tweet the article to their Twitter followers.

It also permits the user to go directly to the Comments section of the website, either to simply read other comments or post their own.  Furthermore, if the user wants to opt-out of their subscription, they can easily do so by clicking on the Manage Subscription link.

WordPress developers have outdone themselves with this fantastic plug-in!  I highly recommend the Jetpack Plug-in for WordPress! …best of all, and characteristic of WordPress, it’s free.

I attended another webinar on Viral Webcaster earlier today.  This webinar was broadcast live on Facebook.  I wanted to pass on some key points that I learned.  I tested them all, and they work!  Let me share a screenshot that I captured to show you a few of the viral elements that are working on Viral Webcaster.

First and foremost, this was an amazing presentation!  I began to see the true value of this application almost immediately.  After all, I do have an understanding of the viral sharing nature of Facebook.  And, this application takes full advantage of what Facebook has to offer.

While it is not shown on the above screenshot, anyone attending this live presentation had to first hit that now famous “Like” button.  They don’t have to pay admission to the webinar, but they do have to share their invitation.  When they do so, they share their invitation with all their Facebook friends, enabling their friends to also join the webinar.  It’s like sharing a free ticket to a great movie, but in this case the ticket is free.  The last time I checked, the average Facebook user has 130 friends.

Four, very important social media buttons are displayed across the top of the screenshot.  Two of these buttons are external to Facebook.  They can share an invitation via Twitter or the new Google Plus social media sharing function.  Plus, anytime they make a comment on the webinar this too can be shared with all their friends!
